Well-Known Musician & Activist Seeks Community Donations in the Wake of a Family Tragedy
for immediate release June 6, 2011
Toni Hill has spent most of her adult life giving back to the communities she has called home and now she urgently needs the community to return the love.
On Memorial Day, May 30, 2011, Raymond Buchanan, known musically as DJ Double R or by friends and family as Ray Ray unexpectedly died of heart failure. He was 42 and had no insurance and now, his family, including his sister Toni Hill, needs the community’s donations in order to lay him to rest.
You may recognize Toni Hill as one of the original members of the legendary band Hungry Mob, or maybe you know her as one of only two female emcees who rock with the Oldominion crew. You may know her as one of the two members of the legendary girl group Sirens Echo (along with Syndel of Oldominion) or perhaps you are more familiar with her debut solo project, “Only Love,” produced by Amos Miller.
No matter where you know Toni from, what may be less known about her is her life long commitment to community volunteer work. Toni credits her grandmother, the late Evelyn Buchanan, for instilling in her a spirit of giving. The list of organizations Toni has volunteered with is innumerable. From FTP (Feed The People) in Atlanta, GA to repeat efforts with the now annual Portland Youth Summit, Toni Hill has been paying it forward, one effort at a time. Other agencies she has worked with include Guerrilla Theater (Portland), Sisterz of The Underground (San Francisco), Power of Hope (Seattle), Youth Speaks (Seattle), and the Seattle Debate Foundation. Toni has also worked with Gateways for Incarcerated Youth (Olympia), Veterans for Peace (Portland), and she participated in multiple fundraisers events for survivors of Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti Earthquake.
Toni Hill and her family are hopeful that the communities Toni has devoted her life to serving and uplifting, via volunteer services and music with a message, will return some of the love and make a donation that will go directly towards the cost of laying her brother, Raymond Buchanan to rest. Donations are being accepted at any Bank of America, Washington Checking Account Number 46 48 67 67, payable to Antonia Hill for Raymond Buchanan. PLEASE CIRCLE WA as the state code (where the account was set up) when making a deposit from any Bank of America.

Una Rosa para Toni Hill
Written by Senyor Cullera
Arte - Música
A walking enigma, Toni Hill has long been one of the most dynamic and enthralling performers in the Northwest. Whether it be with her contributions through the Hungry Mob or with fellow lady-in-arms, Syndel, in the offshoot “Siren’s Echo,” Miss Hill has always brought with her a spirit that was at once unbreakable and gently caressing; it often feels as if she can be both the best friend and the beautiful paramour with a dose of Felisha Rashad-come-Bill Cosby “you better get right” thrown in for good measure.
Her solo debut “Only Love” is a journey down many personal paths of her life, from the wistful and sultry tones of the title track, through the inviting “Vibe Out,” there is a flavor for every mood. This is typical for Toni, as since her childhood (and throughout her life), she has been comfortable walking in multiple worlds.
Whether it be from her upbringing with a multi-racial (Black and Native American) Mother to her assisting her Grandmother (Evelyn Monroe Buchanan) as she did outreach at El Centro De La Raza, or her time living in Puerto Rico, she has always felt a kinship with Latinos. “I was even declared an honorary Mexican,” says Miss Hill, glowing with pride. As a bilingual woman, she has often found herself speaking Spanish with her many Latino friends and their extended families.
“I have always felt like Latinos and Blacks and Natives have traveled the same paths, faced the same issues,” she explains, “from single parenthood to the core values of our people. We’re more the same than different.”
Such sentiments are expressed thoroughly in Miss Toni Hill’s new video “Rose.” It is a deeply touching song about waiting around for love, that unconditional love which is shared between parents and siblings. Unafraid to reach into the deepest parts of her soul, the song delves into the effect that such behaviors by an absentee parent have upon a young woman as she becomes grown and finds men who run the same sort of game upon them as their fathers ran upon their mothers. Preventing such things from recurring and breaking that cycle of illegitimacy is a passion for Toni.
“I feel like I have to get that song out there,” speaking of ‘Rose’, “it is such an important message and I feel like if I can get my story out there then maybe I can help someone else who is going through [it].”
If everyone who went through such struggles turned out as strong as Miss Toni Hill, the world would be a better place.

The seductive and soulful R&B songstress Toni Hill will perform music from her new album "Only Love" on 12 - 1:30 p.m. August 6 at City Hall plaza, joined by an eight-piece band featuring special guest DJ B-Girl. Hill's music will move your body and may even stir a summer romance as she vibes out to groove-worthy hip-hop beats.
The Seattle Presents concert series is presented year-round by Seattle's Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs at City Hall, 600 Fourth Ave.
In case of inclement weather, the performance will move inside the City Hall lobby and conclude at 1 p.m. For rain-out updates check the Seattle Presents Web site at www.seattle.gov/seattlepresents or call (206) 684-7171.
Miss Hill first threw herself into the music business in 1999, soon opening for groups like The Wu-Tang Clan, Gil Scott-Heron, and The Roots with her neo soul flavor. An active presence in the Pacific Northwest hip-hop scene for years as a member of the legendary Northwest crew Oldominion and the revered female duo Sirens Echo, the release of Toni Hill's latest album this spring marks her debut as an R&B solo artist. Her new sound blends jazz and heartfelt lyrics with a classic, slow R&B style, while sharing the stage with DJ B-Girl and Syndel will encourage her to dig back to her roots of empowering rap and hard-hitting hip-hop.
Toni Hill's music focuses heavily on love in all its different forms, and while her smooth vocal sound has won her followings in New York and Atlanta, she has kept the Northwest close to her heart, continuing to engage in charity work with Seattle organizations Power of Hope, The Seattle Debate Foundation, and Gateways for Incarcerated Youth.
The Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs promotes the value of arts and culture in communities throughout Seattle. The 16-member Seattle Arts Commission, citizen volunteers appointed by the mayor and City Council, supports the city agency.

Toni Hill's "Rose" on KUBE's sound session
I was really excited to recieve a call last night from my brother, he told me I was on the radio the other day. He said that someone called him and told him they were about to play a song from my "Only Love" album so he quickly called a few relatives so they could all listen in. He called me but I was at the studio and I left my phone at home so I didn't know.
Kube 93 in Seattle played my song "Rose" on their show called Sound Sessions with Dj Hyphen and J. Moore.
Today I recieved an email from B.girl media with the play list from that show and sure enough, nestled in with Maxwell, De la Soul and others was Toni Hill "Rose"... Yaay!!!

boxing class gone bad!!!...not good.
Umm we were trying to learn how to box in the living room when someone got a lil too rowdy. The result was a chase scene through the kitchen...umm and a push that caused the window to be broken. Yikes!!!!...
the grind never stops
The producer for my album, Amos Miller called me to say he is at the studio making me show cd's for my Only love project...I am so happy because I will finally be able to do shows without the band. I love having a band but I can do way more shows off cd while I find better paid gigs for my musicians.
I have a tour opportunity that I am waiting to hear back from shamako of hip hop congress about...it's supposed to be late May to early June. perfect.
I am updating all the various pages I have...myspace,facebook, soul commune, black planet, twitter, and blog spot. I am starting to get the hang of it but I still don't blog like I should.
If people would submit questions I would be more inspired.

Late night, early morning
In The music Biz the days are long, the nights are even longer and the freaking day come right back around before you can get a chance to hit the pillow.
I have been grinding hard since before the release of Only Love.
It's 2am and some change and I am just getting in from an eventful day. I ate a 4 party wings and a yougurt for dinner a few minutes ago which is probably horrible to be eating so late.
My eating habits hare improved in terms of what I am eating but the w
hen...That is one place that begs attention.
I have to get p early nce again to do my workout, meet some relatives for lunch at 11am then do grocery list of other things throught the day, including blog, twitter, and making business calls to book gigs.
I am in serious need of management. Oh and I forgot I have to finish the cirriculum I am writing with Jen Johnson of Seattle debate foundation that is getting published. I also need to do someonline banking and bill paying...Oh and my mornings will have to start earlier next week because I have to start rehearsing, finding a band to gig with and add more onto my workout.
I am not complaining...I guess I am just letting off stress.
I want to be my personal best, that requires alot...so "I gotta go hard, or go home!" as they say in the streets.

unidentified creatures...lol
So I am talking on the phone to my mom while I walk through the neighborhood to the nearby football feild that has a track when I come across somethink slinking in the grass. It was brown and furry so my first instinct was maybe its a cat. I slowed my pace down so I could study its behavior for a minute. It was crouched low then rolled to one side in the sun. I still wasn't convienced it was a cat so I inched a lil closer to see if it was a racoon but that alarmed me so i decided than when in doubt just throw something! so I picked up a stick and tossed it within 10 ft of the creature. It dashed off towards the wooded area that is right by the fence that I need to pass to get to the track...umm yikes!!!
I looked for cat ears or racoon markings but it had neither...so I asked my mother what it could possible be. we collectively came up with a beaver. bUt I wasn't certain so I walked to the other end of the park and climed the fence to get to the track, all the while talking to my mom on the phone and explaining how when I lived in Puerto rico I saw some other unidentified creature. It resembled a squirrel, rabbit and mouse mixed togethor...lol some kinda hybrid creature sort of like a chinchilla.
My mom laughed at me because I jumped the fence...I said" all those dance classes and being a tomboy and athlete all my life has to pay off somekinda way!" she was so amused.
so fast forward to my workout: Its a absolutely gorgeous day. sun shinning, birds singing, children playing n the field...then dun dun dun...I notice the slinking character from the corner of my eye. My spidey senses tell me to go see what it is...my horror movie senses tell me to run! Lol
So I did a combo, I ran the fence that seperated the track from the feild that was about 25 yards from the creature. It stood up and its mouth was moving really fast like a hamster and it had small paws in front and I could linda make out the flat tail...It was a beaver. But I had to be sure so I called my life line. I called home to ask my cousin Tee if there were any Beavers in our neighborhood. She said Yes. and that she tried to tell her husband but he didn't believe her.
So the mystery creature is solved. Now If I could just find Shaggy and Scooby for a sandwhich...I am starving...salad is not doing it for me.

Officer friendly???
Officer friendly?!!!!
@Wow...is how I start this evenings blog.
Blacque Butterfly and I were on one of our many adventures getting ready for my cd release party in Seattle. I just dropped off the video of Rose from my Only Love album at my mom's house when we came across a police officer that was creeping down Lombard in the northside, a notorious area for police brutality and negative interactions with local residents.
Butterfly and I were wondering why the cop suddenly sped up alongside of us and started flagging us down. Since we were in a rental car neither of us could figure out how to roll down the window.
Once we figured it out Butterfly politely exclaimed" Rental car!"...
A smiling, white, female police officer relpied "You need to turn your headlights on!"
"huh?" we turned to each other because we were completely shocked!!! not because of the lights...umm duh!!!
Number 1 she was smiling !
Number 2 she was telling us to turn on the lights insead of pulling us over
and last but not least, did I mention she was smiling??!!!
So we quickly turned on the lights, she gave a lil nod and kept it pushing...All I have to say before I go to bed is the Officer friendly we learned about in elementary school obviously exists...at least tonight. lol

Only Love gets rave review from Dj O.G One

Dj O.G One loves my album!!! Yaay!...I feel so honored.
Right now I am at IFCC doing a show called Hip Hop Caberet with Mic crenshaw, Syndel of Sirens echo and oldominionion, Othello from Light headed and a bunch of break dancers...I think Bretto is on the bill too. I am just so excited to be back in Portland building with cats and doing great work.
I looked on my myspace and face book pages and saw that O.G said my album Only Love is the best one he has heard coming out of the town...Wow. That is like a heavy compliment. I hope I can truly live up to that.

making history...our story!

Last night after Amos Miller, Soulchilde and myself left 91.3 kbcs radio station we went to mamas pizza on capitol hill. I was drawn to a large black and white photo of the old school Jazz musicians from the 1930's.
I made me think about several imprtant conversations that I had over the past 3 years with Gabriel teodros while recording the Love work album and my Only Love album about making history and being in a renaissance.
The same discussion I had with Blacque butterfly as she carefully put togethor her first release or the conversations I had with Ro Deezy before she had a laundry list of books to her credit...WE are the people I saw on the poster...WE are the movement, the music, the persons the youth and others look up to that music, art, literature and poetry pour out of our vessels as the creator allows us use our gifts, talents and skills to transform the world as we know it.
WE need to document our history; take photos, help each other learn and grow through the process...build community and support one another. Our stories need to be inked, our voices rising high like the most magestic mountains, our rich cultures and forms of expression celebrated.
Today,
I found this photo in my belongings and decided to blog about it...just in that moment a heard a young woman singing Billie Holiday @ Hidmos for the lady's first event. Running to catch the last bit of it I left my lap top un attended and stood transfixed. Her voice like the honey I just put in the tea I was sipping made me smile...and she will forever be a part of the history...even if it was only documented in my mind.

I'm back!
Hello Fellow bloggers and followers of the blog,
I feel like I am a part of a new movement...The Blog movement. I admit I under utilize this as a form of communication and I often go on rants to my friends that I don't really like it. I think If I had more information or better examples of what to blog about I would find it more enjoyable.
I guess It still feels like journal entries to me...although I heard that Khingz and Gabriel teodros have great blogs with video footage and all types of interesting things on there.
B.Girl Mia is helping me get my blog life togethor...lol!
Please note my sincere attempt to be a part of the groove...
Peace and progress,
T.Hill
